When I first came to Trujillo, back in 2017, I was one hundred percent clueless as to where I should go shopping for my groceries. Fast forward a few years and I’ve learned quite a bit about the local grocery shopping scene.
Here, I’ll be keeping track of some of the best places to go for groceries in Trujillo, supermarkets and street markets alike, whether you’re looking for specific products or just want to know where you can go to get all the basics. The title of each market is linked to its Google Map location.
Mercado Hermelinda
Hermelinda is a huge market with tons of vendors where you can find… well, pretty much anything for some of the most competitive prices around. This is my favorite place to buy fresh fruits and veggies.
Miscellaneous Products You Can Find Here…
Sesame oil (in fact, if you’re looking for products more related to Asian cuisine, this is a great place to do so), herbs (bay leaves, cinnamon, rosemary, basil, etc.), ALL the fruits and veggies
Mercado Central
The prices here aren’t as cheap as what you can find at Hermelinda, and the selection not quite as comprehensive, but still a good place to buy fruits, veggies, meat, and more. There are a few good places especially to buy meat here as well as our favorite place to buy fresh ground coffee.
Miscellaneous Products You Can Find Here…
Beef, fresh ground coffee
Mercado Mayorista
Fruits, veggies, and more. Again, prices are not as cheap as what you can get in Hermelinda but, still, better than what you could get in a supermarket. This is our preferred market to go to buy certain supplies in bulk (i.e. toilet paper, laundry detergent, rice, pasta, etc.) due to being conveniently located to the Espaanglisch Casa. If you go, just be sure to keep an eye on your belongings as petty theft does sometimes occur here.
Feria Cajamarquina
This is our favorite place to go to buy cheese, butter, chorizo, bacon, nuts, dried fruits, and more. You can also find products here like spirulina, different types of flour, coconut oil, cacao, granola, etc. etc.
Miscellaneous Products You Can Find Here…
Spirulina, coconut oil, peanut butter, cacao, granola
Mercado Pesquero
The local fish market – hard to beat the prices for fresh seafood that are offered here. It’s only open early so, if you want to go shopping here, be sure to go early in the morning. You don’t want to buy fish at the market later in the day, anyway, as that most likely means it’s been sitting around longer.
Ecovalle Market Saludable
Great place to buy organic goods produced in Peru. I was super pumped to find jojoba oil which I use it as a face moisturizer and makeup remover. They’ve got other beauty products too, like Almond Oil & Rose Water, as well as a number of different snacks, nut butters, and more.
Miscellaneous Products You Can Find Here…
Jojoba oil, almond oil, rose water, organic chocolate
Plaza Vea Hypermarket
If you’re looking for more of a supermarket shopping experience, the Plaza Vea Hypermarket in Real Plaza is my favorite option that consistently has what I need in terms of meat, wine, and so forth. Plaza Vea is a chain that you can find throughout Peru. There is another smaller Plaza Vea as well on Avenida España in Trujillo. The selection there is not the greatest but you can still find the basics. You can currently do online ordering and scheduled delivery via PedidosYa.
Miscellaneous Products You Can Find Here…
Wine, some less commonly found cheeses (i.e. blue cheese, goat cheese)
Wong Larco or Wong California
Another supermarket shopping experience. The selection here is generally okay. They tend to have some more products that you would find in the US if there’s something you’re missing or craving. Wong is another big supermarket chain in Peru that you can find throughout the country. If you’re looking for at-home delivery, you can currently do so through Rappi.
Tottus
Yet another supermarket shopping experience. I don’t shop here often but the product selection seems okay. Another chain.
Your local bodega
There are tons of little bodegas all around Trujillo with a number of different products, ranging from chifles and chocolates to delicious fresh fruits and veggies. Whether you have a late-night chocolate craving or need some eggs to make breakfast in the morning, give your little neighborhood bodega a try.
